In the eighth (chapter) it has been established that the
Lord is attained by pure devotion. Now in the ninth His most
wonderful glory is being delineated.

atha navamo' dhyāyaḥ | rājavidyārājaguhyayogaḥ

Thus the Ninth Chapter |
The Path of Royal Knowledge and Royal Secret

1.

śrībhagavānuvāca:
idaṃ tu te guhyatamaṃ pravakṣyāmyanasūyave |
jñānaṃ vijñānasahitaṃ yajjñātvā mokṣyase'śubhāt ||

The Blessed Lord said:
To you who are not cavilling, I shall teach this most
secret knowledge in particular, coupled with realization,
knowing which you will be freed from evil.

2.

rājavidyā rājaguhyaṃ pavitramidamuttamam |
pratyakṣāvagamaṃ dharmyaṃ susukhaṃ kartumavyayam ||

This is royal knowledge, the royal secret, supremely holy,
directly experienced, righteous, easy to practice and imperishable.

3.

aśraddadhānāḥ puruṣā dharmasyāsya paraṃtapa |
aprāpya māṃ nivartante mṛtyusaṃsāravartmani ||

Persons wanting in faith in this teaching, O scorcher of
foes, return to the path of this mortal world without
attaining Me.

4.

mayā tatamidaṃ sarvaṃ jagadavyaktamūrtinā |
matsthāni sarvabhūtāni na cāhaṃ teṣvavasthitaḥ ||

All this is pervaded by Me of unmanifest form;
all beings are in Me but I am not in them.

5.

na ca matsthāni bhūtāni paśya me yogamaiśvaram |
bhūtabhṛnna ca bhūtastho mamātmā bhūtabhāvanaḥ ||

Nor are the beings in Me, behold My divine mystery;
(though) the sustainer and the protector of beings, yet
My Self is not in these beings.

6.

yathākāśasthito nityaṃ vāyuḥ sarvatrago mahān |
tathā sarvāṇi bhūtāni matsthānītyupadhāraya ||

As the vast wind blowing everywhere ever abides in space,
know, even so do all beings abide in Me.

7.

sarvabhūtāni kaunteya prakṛtiṃ yānti māmikām |
kalpakṣaye punastāni kalpādau visṛjāmyaham ||

At the end of a cycle all beings, O son of Kunti, attain My
Prakriti; at the beginning of the (next) cycle I again send
them forth.

8.

prakṛtiṃ svāmavaṣṭabhya visṛjāmi punaḥ punaḥ |
bhūtagrāmamimaṃ kṛtsnamavaśaṃ prakṛtervaśāt ||

Presiding over My Nature (Prakriti), I again and again
send forth this entire aggregate of helpless beings,
according to their nature.

9.

na ca māṃ tāni karmāṇi nibadhnanti dhanaṃjaya |
udāsīnavadāsīnamasaktaṃ teṣu karmasu ||

These acts (of creation, etc.) do not bind Me, O Arjuna,
who remain unattached to them like one indifferent.

10.

mayādhyakṣeṇa prakṛtiḥ sūyate sacarācaram |
hetunānena kaunteya jagadviparivartate ||

Presiding over by Me, Prakriti brings forth the world of
moving and unmoving things; for that reason, O son of
Kunti (Arjuna), the world revolves.

11.

avajānanti māṃ mūḍhā mānuṣīṃ tanumāśritam |
paraṃ bhāvamajānanto mama bhūtamaheśvaram ||

The ignorant deride Me who have taken a human form,
not knowing My higher nature as the great Lord of beings.

12.

moghāśā moghakarmāṇo moghajñānā vicetasaḥ |
rākṣasīmāsurīṃ caiva prakṛtiṃ mohinīṃ śritāḥ ||

Of vain hopes, of vain efforts, of vain knowledge, thoughtless
and taking to the deceptive and demoniac and fiendish
nature (they deride Me).

13.

mahātmānastu māṃ pārtha daivīṃ prakṛtimāśritāḥ |
bhajantyananyamanaso jñātvā bhūtādimavyayam ||

But the great-souled ones taking to the divine nature, O
Pārtha, worship me with one-pointed devotion, knowing
Me to be the cause of all beings and immutable.

14.

satataṃ kīrtayanto māṃ yatantaśca dṛḍhavratāḥ |
namasyantaśca māṃ bhaktyā nityayuktā upāsate ||

Always praising Me, striving with austere vows, and
bowing down to Me with devotion, always steadfast, they
worship Me.

15.

jñānayajñena cāpyanye yajanto māmupāsate |
ekatvena pṛthaktvena bahudhā viśvatomukham ||

Worshipping through the knowledge-sacrifice others adore
Me, either as identical or as as separate, or they adore Me,
the manifold in different forms.

16.

ahaṃ kraturahaṃ yajñaḥ svadhāhamahamauṣadham |
mantro'hamahamevājyamahamagnirahaṃ hutam ||

I am Kratu, I am Yajna, I am the oblations to the Manes, I
am the product of the annuals, I am the Mantra, I alone
am the clarified butter, I am the (sacrificial) fire and the
offering in the fire.

17.

pitāhamasya jagato mātā dhātā pitāmahaḥ |
vedyaṃ pavitramoṃkāra ṛksāma yajureva ca ||

I am the father of this world, the mother, the dispenser, the
grandsire, that which is to be known, the purifier, the Om
and also the Vedas – Rik, Sāman and Yajus.

18.

gatirbhartā prabhuḥ sākṣī nivāsaḥ śaraṇaṃ suhṛt |
prabhavaḥ pralayaḥ sthānaṃ nidhānaṃ bījamavyayam ||

I am the goal, the sustainer, the Lord, the witness, the
abode, the refuge, the friend, the source, the destroyer,
the support, the repository and the eternal seed.

19.

tapāmyahamahaṃ varṣaṃ nigṛṇhāmyutsṛjāmi ca |
amṛtaṃ caiva mṛtyuśca sadasaccāhamarjuna ||

I give heat, I restrain and let loose the rain, I am immortality,
I am death, I am manifest and unmanifest also, O Arjuna.

20.

traividyā māṃ somapāḥ pūtapāpā
yajñairiṣṭvā svargatiṃ prārthayante |
te puṇyamāsādya surendralokaṃ
aśnanti divyāndivi devabhogān ||

The knowers of the Vedas, purified from sins by drinking
the Soma juice and worshipping me with sacrifices, pray
for access to heaven; they having attained the meritorious
sphere of Indra, experience in heaven celestial enjoyments
of the gods.

21.

te taṃ bhuktvā svargalokaṃ viśālaṃ
kṣīṇe puṇye martyalokaṃ viśanti |
evaṃ trayīdharmamanuprapannā
gatāgataṃ kāmakāmā labhante ||

Having enjoyed the extensive heavenly sphere, when
their virtue is exhausted, they enter the mortal world. Thus
those who take refuge in the religion of the Vedas, desirous
of enjoyments, go and come.

22.

ananyāścintayanto māṃ ye janāḥ paryupāsate |
teṣāṃ nityābhiyuktānāṃ yogakṣemaṃ vahāmyaham ||

Those persons, who think of nothing else and worship Me
through meditation-the accession to and the maintenance
of the welfare of such ever devout persons I look after.

23.

ye'pyanyadevatābhaktā yajante śraddhayānvitāḥ |
te'pi māmeva kaunteya yajantyavidhipūrvakam ||

Even those devotees of other gods who worship (them)
endowed with faith, worship Me alone, O son of Kunti
(Arjuna), though in an unauthorized way.

24.

ahaṃ hi sarvayajñānāṃ bhoktā ca prabhureva ca |
na tu māmabhijānanti tattvenātaścyavanti te ||

I am the enjoyer, and the Lord also, of all sacrifices. But
they do not know Me in truth; therefore they fall down.

25.

yānti devavratā devānpitйnyānti pitṛvratāḥ |
bhūtāni yānti bhūtejyā yānti madyājino'pi mām ||

The worshippers of the gods go to the gods, the worshippers
of the manes go to the manes, the worshippers of the
spirits go to the spirits, and My worshippers too come to Me.

26.

patraṃ puṣpaṃ phalaṃ toyaṃ yo me bhaktyā prayacchati |
tadahaṃ bhaktyupahṛtamaśnāmi prayatātmanaḥ ||

He who with devotion offers Me a leaf, a flower, a fruit or
water, that devout offering of the pure-minded one I accept.

27.

yatkaroṣi yadaśnāsi yajjuhoṣi dadāsi yat |
yattapasyasi kaunteya tatkuruṣva madarpaṇam ||

Whatever you do, or eat, or sacrifice, or give, whatever
austerity you perform, that, O son of Kunti, offer unto Me.

28.

śubhāśubhaphalairevaṃ mokṣyase karmabandhanaiḥ |
saṃnyāsayogayuktātmā vimukto māmupaiṣyasi ||

Thus you will be rid of the bonds of action resulting in good
and evil; being free and with your mind endowed with the
Yoga of renunciation, you will attain Me.

29.

I am the same to all beings; there is no one hateful or dear
to Me; but they who worship Me with devotion, are in Me,
and I am also in them.

30.

api cetsudurācāro bhajate māmananyabhāk |
sādhureva sa mantavyaḥ samyagvyavasito hi saḥ ||

Even if a very wicked person worships Me to the exclusion
of anybody else, he should be regarded as righteous, for he
has rightly resolved.

31.

kṣipraṃ bhavati dharmātmā śaśvacchāntiṃ nigacchati |
kaunteya pratijānīhi na me bhaktaḥ praṇaśyati ||

He soon becomes righteous-minded and attains eternal
peace; O Son of Kunti, proclaim (to the world) that My
devotee never perishes.

32.

māṃ hi pārtha vyapāśritya ye'pi syuḥ pāpayonayaḥ |
striyo vaiśyāstathā śūdrāste'pi yānti parāṃ gatim ||

Even they who are of sinful birth, women, Vaishyas, as also
Sudras, taking refuge in Me, verily attain the highest goal.

33.

kiṃ punarbrāhmaṇāḥ puṇyā bhaktā rājarṣayastathā |
anityamasukhaṃ lokamimaṃ prāpya bhajasva mām ||

Not to mention virtuous Brāhmanas and devoted royal sages.
Having attained this ephemeral joyless body, worship Me.

34.

manmanā bhava madbhakto madyājī māṃ namaskuru |
māmevaiṣyasi yuktvaivamātmānaṃ matparāyaṇaḥ ||

Fix your mind on Me, be My devotee, sacrifice to
Me and bow down to Me; thus fixing the mind on Me
and having Me for the supreme goal, you will attain Me alone.

In this ninth chapter named the royal secret the Lord has spoken
out of His grace about His own transcendental glory and the
wonderful greatness of devotion.
