Thus the Tenth Chapter |
Meditation on The Divine Glories
śrībhagavānuvāca:
bhūya eva mahābāho śṛṇu me paramaṃ vacaḥ |
yatte'haṃ prīyamāṇāya vakṣyāmi hitakāmyayā ||
The Blessed Lord said:
Hear again, O mighty-armed one, My supreme word, which
I, wishing your welfare, shall tell you who take delight in it.
na me viduḥ suragaṇāḥ prabhavaṃ na maharṣayaḥ |
ahamādirhi devānāṃ maharṣīṇāṃ ca sarvaśaḥ ||
Neither the gods nor the great sages know My birth; for I
am the cause of the gods and the great sages in all respects.
yo māmajamanādiṃ ca vetti lokamaheśvaram |
asaṃmūḍhaḥ sa martyeṣu sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate ||
He who knows Me, the birthless and beginningless Lord of
creatures, is undeluded among men and is freed from all sins.
buddhirjñānamasaṃmohaḥ kṣamā satyaṃ damaḥ śamaḥ |
sukhaṃ duḥkhaṃ bhavo'bhāvo bhayaṃ cābhayameva ca ||
ahiṃsā samatā tuṣṭistapo dānaṃ yaśo'yaśaḥ |
bhavanti bhāvā bhūtānāṃ matta eva pṛthagvidhāḥ ||
Discrimination, knowledge, non-delusion, forgiveness,
truthfulness, self-control, tranquillity, happiness, misery,
existence, non-existence, fear and also fearlessness,
non-injury, equanimity, contentment, austerity, charity,
fame, ill fame- these different dispositions of beings
are indeed born of Me.
maharṣayaḥ sapta pūrve catvāro manavastathā |
madbhāvā mānasā jātā yeṣāṃ loka imāḥ prajāḥ ||
The seven great sages, the earlier four, and also the
Manus, were born of My mind endowed with My
essence-whose progeny are these in the world.
etāṃ vibhūtiṃ yogaṃ ca mama yo vetti tattvataḥ |
so'vikampena yogena yujyate nātra saṃśayaḥ ||
He who knows in truth this glory and power of Mine,
attains unflinching Yoga; there is no doubt about this.
ahaṃ sarvasya prabhavo mattaḥ sarvaṃ pravartate |
iti matvā bhajante māṃ budhā bhāvasamanvitāḥ ||
I am the source of all, everything is produced out of Me,
knowing thus the wise worship Me with devotion.
maccittā madgataprāṇā bodhayantaḥ parasparam |
kathayantaśca māṃ nityaṃ tuṣyanti ca ramanti ca ||
With their mind and senses directed to Me, explaining
Me to each other, and talking of Me-they are always
pleased and happy.
teṣāṃ satatayuktānāṃ bhajatāṃ prītipūrvakam |
dadāmi buddhiyogaṃ taṃ yena māmupayānti te ||
To these who are (thus) ever devoted to Me and worship
Me with love, I give that Yoga of understanding by which
they come unto Me.
teṣāmevānukampārthamahamajñānajaṃ tamaḥ |
nāśayāmyātmabhāvastho jñānadīpena bhāsvatā ||
Just to bless them, I, residing in their intellect, destroy the darkness
born of ignorance by the resplendent light of knowledge.

arjuna uvāca:
paraṃ brahma paraṃ dhāma pavitraṃ paramaṃ bhavān |
puruṣaṃ śāśvataṃ divyamādidevamajaṃ vibhum ||
āhustvāmṛṣayaḥ sarve devarṣirnāradastathā |
asito devalo vyāsaḥ svayaṃ caiva bravīṣi me ||
Arjuna said:
You are the supreme Brahman, the supreme abode
and extremely holy. All sages, the divine sage Nārada, (as
also) Asita, Devala and Vyāsa call You the eternal, resplendent
Being, the primeval deity, birthless and omnipresent.
And You too are telling me so.

vaktumarhasyaśeṣeṇa divyā hyātmavibhūtayaḥ |
yābhirvibhūtibhirlokānimāṃstvaṃ vyāpya tiṣṭhasi ||
Verily, You alone can fully tell about Your divine glories,
through which pervading all these worlds You exist.
kathaṃ vidyāmahaṃ yogiṃstvāṃ sadā paricintayan |
keṣu keṣu ca bhāveṣu cintyo'si bhagavanmayā ||
In what ways always thinking of You, O Yogin, can I know You?
In which particular objects are You to be meditated upon by Me?
vistareṇātmano yogaṃ vibhūtiṃ ca janārdana |
bhūyaḥ kathaya tṛptirhi śṛṇvato nāsti me'mṛtam ||
O Janārdana, tell me once more in detail about Your
powers and glories; for I am not satiated by listening to
Your nectar-like words.
