Śrī Kṛṣṇa Upaniṣad

॥ śrī gurubhyo namaḥ hariḥ oṁ ॥

Salutations to Śrī Guru All-Permeating Hari!

yo rāmaḥ kṛṣṇatāmetya sārvātmyaṁ prāpya līlayā ।
atoṣayaddevamaunipaṭalaṁ taṁ nato'smyaham  ॥ 1॥

oṁ bhadraṁ karṇebhiḥ śṛṇuyāma devāḥ
bhadraṁ paśyemākṣabhiryajatrāḥ ।
sthirairaṅgaistuṣṭuvāṁsastanūbhiḥ
vyaśema devahitaṁ yadāyuḥ ।

Om! O Devas, may we hear with our ears what is auspicious;
May we see with our eyes what is auspicious, O ye worthy of worship!
May we enjoy the term of life allotted by the Devas,
Praising them with our body and limbs steady!

svasti na indro vṛddhaśravāḥ
svasti naḥ pūṣā viśvavedāḥ ।
svasti nastārkṣyo'riṣṭanemiḥ
svasti no bṛhaspatirdadhātu ।

May the glorious Indra bless us!
May the all-knowing Sun bless us!
May Garuda, the thunderbolt for evil, bless us!
May Brihaspati grant us well-being!

oṁ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ ।

Om! Let there be Peace in me!
Let there be Peace in my environment!
Let there be Peace in the forces that act on me!

Introduction

hariḥ oṁ ।

śrīmahāviṣṇuṁ saccidānandalakṣaṇaṁ rāmacandraṁ
dṛṣṭvā sarvāṅgasundaraṁ munayo vanavāsino vismitā babhūvuḥ  ।
taṁ hocurno'vadyamavatārānvai gaṇyante āliṅgāmo bhavantamiti ।
bhavāntare kṛṣṇāvatāre yūyaṁ gopikā bhūtva māmāliṅgatha
anye ye'vatārāste hi gopā na strīśca no kuru । anyonyavigrahaṁ
dhāryaṁ tavāṅgasparśanādiha । śāśvatasparśayitāsmākaṁ
gṛṇhīmo'vatārānvayam॥ 1॥

At the sight of the Lord Mahā Viṣṇu - Rāmacandra, whose limbs are very nice, some sages living in the forest were amazed.

They told him: “We want to embrace you, Oh Lord.”

The Lord Rāmachandra said to them:

"In the next birth, when I become Krishna you will become Gopis and then can you hug me. Others will incarnate as the Gopas and you will be their wives."

॥ atha prathama khaṇḍaḥ ॥

Now the First Chapter

rudrādīnāṁ vacaḥ śṛtvā provāca bhagavānsvayam  ।
aṅgayaṅgaṁ kariṣyāmi bhavadvākyaṁ karomyaham  ॥ 1॥

1. (Śiva and the devas, then said:) 'We will accept these forms again and again, just let us embrace you!"

When hearing these words of Śiva and the devas, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, said: "I will not touch your limbs. I'll do what you're told."

moditāste surā sarve kṛtakṛtyādhunā vayam  ।
yo nandaḥ paramānando yaśodo muktigehinī॥ 2॥

2. Devas rejoiced: "Now our lives have become fortunate," they said. One of them became the most holy Nanda, the other his wife Yaśodā, who was already liberated from cycle of rebirth.

māyā sā trividhā proktā sattvarājasatāmasī  ।
proktā ca sāttvikī rudre bhakte brahmaṇi rājasī  ॥ 3॥

tāmasī daityapakṣeṣu māyā tredhā hyudāhṛtā  ।
ajeyā vaiṣṇavī māyā japyena ca sutā purā  ॥ 4॥

3-4. Deceptive power of Māyā has three characteristics: goodness, passion and ignorance. The Goodness is manifested in Śiva, passion in Brahma and Ignorance is manifested in demons. Thus Māyā has three features. They were born before Lord Krishna.

devakī brahmaputra sā yā vedairupagīyate  ।
nigamo vasudevo yo vedārthaḥ kṛṣṇarāmayoḥ  ॥ 5॥

5. Devakī bore as the son the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Vāsudeva, who knew all the Vedas, became the father of Krishna and Balarāma.

stuvate satataṁ yastu so'vatīrṇo mahītale  ।
vane vṛndāvane krīḍaṅgopagopīsuraiḥ saha॥ 6॥

6. The Supreme Personality of Godhead, whom (sages and devas) celebrate without end, came down to earth to enjoy His pastimes in the woods of Vrindāvan with saints, Gopas and Gopis.

gopyo gāva ṛcastasya yaṣṭikā kamalāsanaḥ  ।
vaṁśastu bhagavān rudraḥ śṛṅgamindraḥ sagosuraḥ॥ 7॥

7. Vedas became personified as the gopis and cows, Brahma became the club of Lord Krishna, Lord Shiva became a flute of Lord Krishna and Indra became a buffalo horn of Lord Krishna. Someone had become a demon Aghāsura.

gokulaṁ vanavaikuṇṭhaṁ tāpasāstatra te drumāḥ  ।
lobhakrodhādayo daityāḥ kalikālastiraskṛtaḥ॥ 8॥

8. The spiritual world became Gokul. Asceticism became personified as trees. Greed, anger, and other sins became demons. Age of Kālī disappeared.

goparūpo hariḥ sākṣānmāyāvigrahadhāraṇaḥ  ।
durbodhaṁ kuhakaṁ tasya māyayā mohitaṁ jagat॥ 9॥

9. The Supreme Personality of Godhead, appeared in its original form as a cowherd boy. World misled and confused by His illusory energy was unable to recognize his true identity.

durjayā sā suraiḥ sarvairdhṛṣṭirūpo bhavedvijaḥ  ।
rudro yena kṛto vaṁśastasya māyā jagatkatham॥ 10॥

10. Neither of devas could overwhelm the Lord's energy Māyā. Due to the energy of the Lord’s Yoga-Māyā Brahma appeared as a stick and Shiva as a flute. How the Lord's energy Māyā could deceive the entire universe?

balaṁ jñānaṁ surāṇāṁ vai teṣāṁ jñānaṁ hṛtaṁ kṣaṇāt  ।
śeśanāgo bhavedrāmaḥ kṛṣṇo brahmaiva śāśvatam  ॥ 11॥

11. Knowledge is power devas. Lord’s energy Māyā withdraws this knowledge in an instant. Lord Śeṣa-nāga (the divine snake) appeared in the form of Lord Balarāma. The Supreme Personality of Godhead, appeared in its original form as Lord Krishna.

aṣṭāvaṣṭasahasre dve śatādhikyaḥ striyastathā  ।
ṛcopaniṣadastā vai brahmarūpā ṛcaḥ striyāḥ॥ 12॥

12. Vedas and Upanishads appeared in forms of 16,108 maidens with perfect spiritual qualities.

dveṣāścāṇūramallo'yaṁ matsaro muṣṭiko jayaḥ  ।
darpaḥ kuvalayāpīḍo garvo rakṣaḥ khago bakaḥ॥ 13॥

13. Hatred became personified as a wrestler Cāṇūra. The Envy became personified as Muṣṭika. Arrogance became personified as elephant Kuvalayāpīḍa. Personified pride became a demonic Bakāsura.

dayā sā rohiṇī mātā satyabhāmā dhareti vai  ।
aghāsuro māhāvyādhiḥ kaliḥ kaṁsaḥ sa bhūpatiḥ॥ 14॥

14. The “Mercy” became personified as a mother Rohiṇī. Goddess Earth became Satyabhāmā. Personified illness became Aghāsura. Personified quarrel became king Kamsa.

śamo mitraḥ sudāmā ca satyākroddhavo damaḥ  ।
yaḥ śaṅkhaḥ sa svayaṁ viṣṇurlakṣmīrupo vyavasthitaḥ॥ 15॥

dugdhasindhau samutpanno meghaghoṣastu saṁsmṛtaḥ  ।
dugdodadhiḥ kṛtastena bhagnabhāṇḍo dadhigṛhe॥ 16॥

15-16. “Humility” became personified as a friend of Lord Sudāmā. Personified truthfulness became Akrūra. Personified self-control became Uddhava.

Lord Vishnu Himself became Kṛṣṇa’s conch, which resounded like thunder and which, also born from the ocean of milk was related to the goddess Lakshmi. Lord Krishna has created an ocean of milk by breaking vessels to steal yogurt.

krīḍate bālako bhūtvā pūrvavatsumahodadhau  ।
saṁhārārthaṁ ca śatrūṇāṁ rakṣaṇāya ca saṁsthitaḥ॥ 17॥

17. Thus the Lord become a child and had fun as ever in a big ocean (milk). Lord Krishna appeared to eliminate their enemies and protect (his devotees).

kṛpārthe sarvabhūtānāṁ goptāraṁ dharmamātmajam  ।
yatsraṣṭumīśvareṇāsītaccakraṁ brahmarūpadṛk॥ 18॥

18. For the Lord Krishna showed mercy to all living beings, love of a son, piety [dharma], which protects all beings. Lord Krishna was also created their chakra, consisting of spiritual energy.

jayantīsambhavo vāyuścamaro dharmasaṁjñitaḥ  ।
yasyāsau jvalanābhāsaḥ khaḍgarūpo maheśvaraḥ॥ 19॥

19. Vāyu became a time of birth of Lord Krishna. The sword in the hand of Krishna was the God of destruction, the Maheśvara himself.

kaśyapolūkhalaḥ khyāto rajjurmātā'ditistathā  ।
cakraṁ śaṅkhaṁ ca saṁsiddhiṁ binduṁ ca sarvamūrdhani॥ 20॥

20. Sage Kaśyapa was born as the archer in Yaśodā’s house and the divine mother Āditi became the rope of Krishna’s bow. Siddhi and Bindu on his head all become Chakra and the conch of Lord Krishna.

yāvanti devarūpāṇi vadanti vibhudhā janāḥ  ।
namanti devarūpebhya evamādi na saṁśayaḥ॥ 21॥

21. There is no doubt that all forms and tools could be seen as incarnated parts of Lord Krishna’s divine play. There is no doubt about it.

gadā ca kālikā sākṣātsarvaśatrunibarhiṇī  ।
dhanuḥ śārṅgaṁ svamāyāca śaratkālaḥ subhojanaḥ॥ 22॥

22. Kālī became a club of Lord Krishna, the destroyer of all enemies. The Lord's power Yoga-māyā became his bow Śārṅga. The harvest season of Śarad became the meals in his house.

abjakāṇḍaṁ jagatbījaṁ dhṛtaṁ pāṇau svalīlayā  ।
garuḍo vaṭabhāṇḍīraḥ sudāmā nārado muniḥ॥ 23॥

23. Lord Kṛṣṇa in his hand playing with the lotus flower, which is the seed of material universes. Garuda became a big banyan (Vrindāvan). Nārada Muni became Sudāmā.

vṛndā bhaktiḥ kriyā buddhīḥ sarvajantuprakāśinī  ।
tasmānna bhinnaṁ nābhinnamābhirbhinno na vai vibhuḥ  ।|

24. Personification of devotional service became gopī Tulasī. The activities of devotional service became the wisdoms that enlighten all living beings. The omnipotent Supreme Lord is different from them and with them are the same.

bhūmāvuttāritaṁ sarvaṁ vaikuṇṭhaṁ svargavāsinām॥ 25॥

25. Thus the Lord moved to the earth the whole spiritual world with its inhabitants.

॥ iti prathama khaṇḍaḥ ॥

It was the First Chapter

॥ atha dvitīyaḥ khaṇḍaḥ ॥

Now the Second Chapter

śeṣo ha vai vāsudevāt saṅkarṣaṇo nāma jīva āsīt ।
so'kāmayata prajāḥ sṛjeyeti ।|1||

1 From the Lord Vāsudeva was manifested Lord Śeṣa, also called Sankarṣaṇa, who was the father of all living beings. He wished "Let’s become many!"

tataḥ pradyumnasaṁjñaka āsīt ।
tasmāt ahaṅkāranāmāniruddho hiraṇyagarbho'jāyata ।
tasmāt daśa prajāpatayo marīcyādyāḥ
sthāṇudakṣakardamapriyavratottanapādavāyavo vyajāyanta ।
tebhyoḥ sarvāṇi bhūtāni ca ।
tasmāccheṣādeva sarvāṇi ca bhūtāni samutpadyante ।
tasminneva pralīyante ।|2||

2 From Him was born person named Pradyumna. Of Pradyumna Aniruddha was born, bearing the names Ahaṅkāra and Hiraṇyagarbha. Of Pradyumna was born ten Prajāpati starting with Marīchi, including Sthāṇu, Dakṣa, Kardama, Priyavrata, Uttānapāda and Vāyu. In this way all living beings were born from the Lord Śeṣa.

sa eva bahudhā jāyamānaḥ sarvān paripāti ।
sa eva kādraveyo vyākaraṇajyotiṣādiśāstraṇi nirmimāṇo
bahubhirmumukṣubhirupāsyamāno'khilāṁ bhuvamekasmin
śīrṣṇa siddhārthavadavadhriyamāṇaḥ sarvairmunibhiḥ
samprārthyamānaḥ sahasraśikharāṇi meroḥ
śirobhirāvāryamāṇo mahāvāyvahaṅkāraṁ nirācakāra ।|3||

3 Lord Śeṣa fathered all living beings and protects them. He created grammar, astrology and other sciences. He is worshiped by sages desiring liberation and Holds the entire universe on its head. Sages know His glory and prayers glorifying Him. Its many heads overshadows thousand times atop Mount Meru. Ether created a false ego.

sa eva bhagavān bhagavantaṁ bahudhā viprīyamāṇaḥ akhilena svena
rupeṇa yuge yuge tenaiva jayamānaḥ sa eva saumitriraikṣvākaḥ
sarvāṇi dhānuṣaśāstrāṇi sarvāṇyastraśāstrāṇi bahudhā
viprīyamāno rakṣāṁsi sarvāṇi vinighnaṁścāturvarṇyadharmān
pravartayāmāsa ।|4||

4 The Lord Śeṣa is the Personality of Godhead. Age after age he appears in many forms. He was born as Lakshmana, Sumitrā’s son and descendant of King Ikṣvāku. He mastered the science of archery and weapons, kill all the demons and protect varṇāśrama-dharma.

sa eva bhagavān yugasandhikāle śāradābhrasaṁnikāśo
rauhineyo vāsudevaḥ sarvāṇi gadādyāyudhaśāstrāṇi
vyācakṣāṇo naikān rājanyamaṇḍalānnirācikīrṣuḥ
bhubhāramakhilaṁ nicakhāna ।|5||

5 The Lord Śeṣa is the Personality of Godhead. During the times of Krishna He appeared as Lord Balarāma, the son of Vāsudeva and Rohiṇī. He shone like an autumn cloud. He was a master in fighting with a club and other weapons, and He killed legions of demon kings to liberate the Mother Earth of her burden.

sa eva bhagavān yuge turiye'pi brahmakule jāyamānaḥ sarva
upaniṣadaḥ uddidhīrṣuḥ sarvāṇi dharmaśāstrāṇi
vistārayiṣṇuḥ sarvānapi janān santārayiṣṇuḥ
sarvānapi vaiṣṇavān dharmān vijṛmbhayan
sarvānapi pāṣaṇḍān nicakhāna ।|6||

6 In the fourth Yuga, the Supreme Personality of Godhead born in brāhmaṇa family [as Lord Nityānanda]. With a desire to teach the message of the Upanishads, preach the truth and dharma śāstra-to liberate all people preaching the eternal truth - Vaiṣṇava-dharma and destroy all atheists and those who insult the Lord.

sa eṣa jagadantaryāmī ।
sa eṣa sarvātmakaḥ ।
sa eva mumukṣubhirdhyeyaḥ ।
sa eva mokṣapradaḥ ।
etaṁ smṛtvā sarvebhyaḥ pāpebhyo mucyate ।
tannāma saṅkīrtayan viṣṇusāyujyaṁ gacchati ।|7||

7 He is the Super-soul present in the heart of every being. He is a subject of meditation for those who yearn for liberation. He grants an exemption of sins. Due to their meditation on Him, persons are cleared of all sins. Chanting His holy names the Liberation is achieved.

tadetad divā adhīyānaḥ rātrikṛtaṁ pāpaṁ nāśayati ।
naktamadhīyāno divasakṛtaṁ pāpaṁ nāśayati ।

8 Who meditates upon Him during the day, is freed of the sins of the night before.
Who meditates on Him at night is freed from the sins of the previous day.

tadetadvedānāṁ rahasyaṁ tadetadupaniṣadāṁ rahasyam
etadadhīyānaḥ sarvatratuphalaṁ labhate
śāntimeti manaḥśuddhimeti sarvatīrthaphalaṁ labhate
ya evaṁ veda dehabandhādvimucyate ityupaniṣat ॥

This is the secret of the Vedas.
 This is the secret of the Upanishads.
 Meditate on it to reach the fruits of all seasons,
peace, pure heart and outcome of pilgrimage routes.
Who knows this will avoid having to re-enter the material body.

This was the Upanishad.

॥ iti dvitīyaḥ khaṇḍaḥ ॥

It was the Second Chapter of Krishna Upanishad.

hariḥ oṁ tatsat

oṁ bhadraṁ karṇebhiḥ śṛṇuyāma devāḥ
bhadraṁ paśyemākṣabhiryajatrāḥ ।
sthirairaṅgaistuṣṭuvāṁsastanūbhiḥ
vyaśema devahitaṁ yadāyuḥ ।

This is Krishna Upanishad

॥ bhāratīramaṇamukhyaprāṇantargata śrīkṛṣṇārpaṇamastu ॥
