Śrī Sanatkumara-saṃhita | Verses 151-175
hasantaṃ hāsyantaṃ ca madhye gopī-kadambakam
snigdha-medhasam ābhāsa- kalyāṇa-guṇa-mandiram
hasantam—laughing; hāsyantam—making laugh; ca—and; madhye—in the midst; gopī-kadambakam—many gopīs; snigdha—with love; medhasam—intelligence; ābhāsa—splendor; kalyāṇa—auspiciousness; guṇa—virtues; mandiram—a palace.
. . . who stood in the midst of many gopīs, laughing and making them laugh, whose heart was filled with love, and who was a great palace of splendor, auspiciousness, and virtues.
prahasya ca tataḥ kṛṣṇo mām āhāmṛta-bhāṣaṇaḥ
ahaṃ te darśanaṃ yātaṃ jñātvā rudra tavepsitam
prahasya—smiling; ca—and; tataḥ—then; kṛṣṇaḥ—Lord Kṛṣṇa; mām—to me; āha—spoke; amṛta—nectar; bhāṣaṇaḥ—speaking words; aham—I; te—of you; darśanam—the vision; yātam—attained; j 24ātvā—understanding; rudra—O Śiva; tava—by you; īpsitam—desired.
Smiling, Lord Kṛṣṇa spoke to me these words of nectar: O Śiva, I could understand your desire. That is why I have now come before your eyes.
yad adya me tvayā dṛṣṭaṃ idaṃ rūpam alaukikam
yat—what; adya—now; me—of Me; tvayā—by you; dṛṣṭam—seen; idam—this; rūpam—form; alaukikam—transcendental; ghanī- bhūta—intense; amala—pure; prema—love; sat—eternal; cit—knowledge; ānanda—and bliss; vigraham—form.
"Now you can see My original form, a form beyond the world of matter, a form filled with intense and pure love, a form eternal and filled with knowledge and bliss.
nīrūpaṃ nirguṇaṃ vyāpī kriyā-hīnaṃ parāt param
vadanti veda-śirasā idam eva mamānagha
nīrūpam—without form; nirguṇam—without qualities; vyāpī—all-pervading; kriyā-hīnam—without activities; parāt—than the greatest; param—greater; vadanti—say; veda-śirasaḥ—the Upaniṣads, who are the crowns of the Vedas; idam—this; eva—indeed; mama—of Me; anagha—O sinless one.
"O sinless one, the Upaniṣads, which form the crown of all the Vedas, say that I am formless, without qualities, all- pervading, inactive, and greater than the greatest.
prākṛtaika-guṇābhāvād anantatvāt tatheśvara
aprasiddhyā mad-guṇānāṃ nirguṇaṃ māṃ vadanti hi
prākṛta—material; eka—one; guṇa—quality; abhāvāt—because of the absence of; anantatvāt—because of being endless; tathā—so; īśvara—O Śiva; aprasiddhyā—because of a lack of attaining perfect knowledge; mad-guṇānām—of My qualities; nirguṇam—without qualities; mām—Me; vadanti—say; hi—indeed.
"Of all My qualities, not a single one is made of matter. My qualities are all limitless and eternal. No one can understand them perfectly or completely. That is why the Upaniṣads say I have no qualities.
adṛśyatvān mamaitasya rūpasya carma-cakṣuṣā
arūpaṃ ma vadanty ete vedāḥ sarve mameśvara
adṛśyatvāt—beacuse of being invisible; mama—of Me; etasya—of this; rūpasya—form; carma-cakṣuṣā—by material eyes; arūpam—formless; mām—Me; vadanti—say; ete—they; vedāḥ—the Vedas; sarve—all; mama—of Me; īśvara—O Śiva.
"O Śiva, My form cannot be seen by material eyes. That is why the Vedas say I am formless.
vyāpakatvāc cid-aṃśena māṃ brahmeti vidur budhāḥ
akartṛtvāt prapañcasya niṣkriyaṃ māṃ vadanty api
vyāpakatvāt—because of being all-pervading; cid- aṃśena—with a fragment of spiritual consciousness; mām—Me; brahma—the Brahman; iti—thus; viduḥ—know; budhāḥ—the wise; akartṛtvāt—because of not acting; prapañcasya—of the material world; niṣkriyam—without action; mām—Me; vadanti—say; api—also.
"With a single fragment of consciousness I pervade everything. That is why the philosophers think I am the formless Brahman. My actions have nothing to do with the world of matter. That is why the philosophers say I am inactive.
māyā-guṇair yutā me 'ṃśāḥ kurvanti sṛjanādikam
na karomi svayaṃ kiñcit sṛṣṭy-ādikam ahaṃ śiva
māyā—of matter; guṇaiḥ—with the qualities; yutā—endowed; me—of Me; aṃśāḥ—parts; kurvanti—do; sṛjana—material creation; ādikam—beginning with; na—not; karomi—I do; svayam—personally; kiñcit—anything; sṛṣṭy-ādikam—beginning with creation; aham—I; śiva—O Śiva.
"Filled with the modes of material nature, the demigods, who are My parts and parcels, create, maintain, and destroy the material universes. O Śiva, I do not Myself create, maintain, or destroy them.
aham āsāṃ mahā-deva gopīnāṃ prema-vihvalaḥ
kriyāntaraṃ na jānāmi nātmānam api mānada
aham—I; āsām—was; mahā-deva—O Śiva; gopīnām—of the gopīs; prema-vihvalaḥ—overcome with love; kriyā—activity; antaram—another; na—not; jānāmi—I know; na—not; ātmānam—Myself; api—even; mānada—O giver of honor to others.
"O Śiva, O humble and respectful one, I am overcome with love for the gopīs. I do not know anything else. I do not even know My own self.
viharāmy anayā nityaṃ asyāḥ prema-vaśī-kṛtaḥ
imaṃ tu mat-priyāṃ viddhi rādhikāṃ para-devatām
viharāmi—I enjoy pastimes; anayā—with Her; nityam—eternally; asyāḥ—of Her; prema-vaśī-kṛtaḥ—controlled by love; imam—this; tu—indeed; mat—My; priyām—beloved; viddhi—please undertsand; rādhikām—Śrī Rādhā; para-devatām—the supreme goddess.
"Please understand the truth of My beloved, the supreme goddess Śrī Rādhā. I enjoy pastimes with Her eternally. She has conquered Me with Her love.
asyāś ca paritaḥ paśya sakhyaḥ sata-sahasraśaḥ
nityāḥ sarvā imā rudra yathāhaṃ nitya-vigrahaḥ
asyāḥ—of Her; ca—and; paritaḥ—everywhere; paśya—please see; sakhyaḥ—friends; sata-sahasraśaḥ—hundreds and thousands; nityāḥ—eternal; sarvāḥ—all; imā—they; rudra—O Lord Śiva; yathā—as; aham—I; nitya-vigrahaḥ—eternal form.
"O Śiva, see how hundreds and thousands of Her friends surround Us. As I am eternal, so are they also.
sakhāyaḥ pitarau gopā gāvo vṛndāvanaṃ mama
nityam eva sarvam etat cid-ānanda-rasātmakam
sakhāyaḥ—friends; pitarau—parents; gopā—gopas; gāvaḥ—cows; vṛndāvanam—Vṛndāvana; mama—named; nityam—eternal; eva—indeed; sarvam—all; etat—this; cid-ānanda-rasātmakam—eternal, blissful, and sweet like nectar.
My gopa friends, parents, cows, and this land named Vṛndāvana are all eternal. They are spiritual, blissful, and sweet like nectar.
idam ānanda-kandākhyaṃ viddhi vṛndāvanaṃ mama
yasmin praveśa-mātreṇa na punaḥ saṃsṛtiṃ viśet
idam—this; ānanda—of bliss; kanda—the root; ākhyam—named; viddhi—know; vṛndāvanam—Vṛndāvana; mama—named; yasmin—in which; praveśa-mātreṇa—simply by entering; na—not; punaḥ—again; saṃsṛtim—the world of birth and death; viśet—enters.
Know that My Vṛndāvana is filled with bliss. One who enters it never again enters the world of birth and death.
mad-vanaṃ prāpya yo mūḍhaḥ punar anyatra gacchati
sa ātma-hā mahādeva sarvathā nātra saṃśayaḥ
mad-vanam—My forest; prāpya—attaining; yaḥ—who; mūḍhaḥ—fool; punaḥ—again; anyatra—another place; gacchati—goes; sa—he; ātma- hā—the killer of the soul; mahādeva—O Śiva; sarvathā—in all respects; na—not; atra—here; saṃśayaḥ—doubt.
One who, after entering My forest, leaves and goes somewhere else is a great fool. O Śiva, it is as if he killed his own soul. Of this there is no doubt.
vṛndāvanaṃ parityajya naiva gacchāmy ahaṃ kvacit
nivasāmy anayā sārdhaṃ aham atraiva sarvadā
vṛndāvanam—Vṛndāvana; parityajya—leaving; na—not; eva—indeed; gacchāmi—go; aham—I; kvacit—anyplace; nivasāmi—I stay; anayā—Her; sārdham—with; aham—I; atra—here; eva—indeed; sarvadā—always.
I never take even a single step out of Vṛndāvana. Accompanied by Śrī Rādhā, I stay here eternally.
ity evaṃ sarvam ākhyātaṃ yat te rudra hṛdi sthitam
kathayasva mamedanīṃ kim anyat śrotum icchasi
iti—thus; evam—thus; sarvam—all; ākhyātam—told; yat—what; te—to you; rudra—O Śiva; hṛdi—in the heart; sthitam—staying; kathayasva—please tell; mama—to Me; īdanīm—now; kim—hat?; anyat—more; śrotum—to hear; icchasi—you desire.
Thus I have told you everything. O Śiva, speak what is in your heart. What more do you wish to hear?
tatas tam abruvaṃ devaṃ ahaṃ ca muni-sattama
īdṛśdas tvaṃ kathaṃ labhyas tam upāyaṃ vadasva me
tataḥ—then; tam—to Him; abruvam—spoke; devam—to the Supreme Personality of Godhead; aham—I; ca—and; muni-sattama—O best of sages; īdṛśdaḥ—like this; tvam—You; katham—how; labhyaḥ—to be attained; tam—that; upāyam—method; vadasva—please tell; me—me.
O best of sages, then I said to Lord Kṛṣṇa: How can one attain You? Please tell me the way.
tato mām āha bhagavān sādhu rudra tvayoditam
ati-guhyatamaṃ hy etat gopanīyaṃ tvayānagha
tataḥ—then; mām—to Me; āha—said; bhagavān—the Supreme Personality of Godhead; sādhu—excellent; rudra—O Śiva; tvayā—by you; uditam—spoken; ati-guhyatamam—very confidential; hi—indeed; etat—this; gopanīyam—to be concealed; tvayā—by you; anagha—O sinless one.
Then Lord Kṛṣṇa said to me: O Śiva, you have spoken well. I will tell you a great secret, which you should carefully conceal, O sinless one.
sakṛd āvāṃ prapanno yas tyaktopāya upāsate
gopī-bhāvena deveśa samam eti na cetarā
sakṛt—once; avam—to Us; prapannaḥ—surrendered; yaḥ—who; tyakta—abandoned; upāyaḥ—methods; upāsate—worships; gopī- bhāvena—with the nature of a gopī; deveśa—O master of the demigods; samam—with; eti—goes; na—not; ca—and; itarā—another.
A person who, renouncing all else, once surrenders to Me and to Śrī Rādhā, and worships Us as the gopīs worship Us, attains Us. No one else attains Us.
yo mām eva prapannaś ca mat-priyāṃ na maheśvara
na kadāpi samāpnoti mām eva te mayoditam
yaḥ—who; mām—to Me; eva—indeed; prapannaḥ—surrenders; ca—abd; mat-priyām—My beloved; na—not; maheśvara—O Śiva; na—not; kadāpi—ever; samāpnoti—attains; mām—Me; eva—indeed; te—to you; mayā—by Me; uditam—spoken.
O Śiva, a person who surrenders to Me but not to My beloved never attains Me. This I tell you.
sakṛd etāṃ prapanno yas tavāsmīti vaded api
sādhanena vināpy eṣa
mām āpnoti na saṃśayaḥ sakṛt—once; etām—to Her; prapannaḥ—surrendered; yaḥ—who; tava—of You; asmi—I am; iti—thus; vadet—says; api—also; sādhanena—by sadhana; vinā—without; api—even; eṣaḥ—he; mām—Me; āpnoti—attains; na—no; saṃśayaḥ—doubt.
A person who once surrenders to Her and tells Her, I am Yours", attains Me also without doing anything further. Of this there is no doubt.
tasmāt sarvātmanā rudra mat-priyāṃ śaraṇaṃ vrajet
ya āśu mat-priyā bhūtvā māṃ vaśi-kartum icchati
tasmāt—therefore; sarvātmanā—with all your hear; rudra—O Śiva; mat-priyām—My beloved; śaraṇam——surrender; vrajet—should attain; ya—who; āśu—quickly; mat-priyā—a gopī dear to Me; bhūtvā—becoming; mām—Me; vaśi-kartum—to bring under control; icchati—desires.
Therefore, O Śiva, a person who desires to conquer Me should surrender, with all his heart, to My beloved. In this way one becomes dear to Me.
idaṃ rahasyaṃ paramaṃ mayā te parikīrtitam
tvayāpy etan mahādeva gopanīyaṃ prayatnataḥ
idam—this; rahasyam—secret; paramam—great; mayā—by Me; te—to you; parikīrtitam—spoken; tvayā—by you; api—also; etat—this; mahādeva—O Śiva; gopanīyam—to be concealed; prayatnataḥ—carefully.
I have spoken to you a very great secret. O Śiva, please conceal it with great care.
tvam apy etāṃ samāśritya rādhikāṃ mama vallabhām
japan me yugalaṃ mantraṃ sadā tiṣṭha mamālaye
tvam—you; api—also; etām—of Her; samāśritya—taking shelter; rādhikām—Śrī Rādhā; mama—My; vallabhām—beloved; japan—chanting; me—of Me; yugalam—two; mantram—mantras; sadā—always; tiṣṭha—stay; mama—of Me; ālaye—in the abode.
You also should take shelter of My beloved Rādhā, chant My two mantras, and always stay in My abode.
śrī-śiva uvāca ity uktvā dakṣiṇe karṇe mama kṛṣṇo dayā-nidhiḥ
upadiśya dvayaṃ hy etat saṃskārāṃś ca vidhāya hi
śrī-śivaḥ uvāca—Śrī Śiva said; iti—thus; uktvā—speaking; dakṣiṇe—in the right; karṇe—ear; mama—of me; kṛṣṇaḥ—Lord Kṛṣṇa; dayā—of mercy; nidhiḥ—an oc4ean; upadiśya—teaching; dvayam—two; hi—indeed; etat—this; saṃskārān—samskaras; ca—and; vidhāya—placing; hi—indeed.
Lord Sadāśiva said: After speaking these words, Lord Kṛṣṇa, who is an ocean of mercy, spoke the two mantras in my right ear. Then He taught me the various saṃskāras.
